Many students like to spend their summers in internships to earn experience and (hopefully) money as well. Many open source projects are cash-strapped but need more developers. What should be a perfect combination hasn't materialized because of the lack of funds. Things are different this summer, however, because the boys and girls at Google have decided to fill in the financial gap with their "Summer of Code" program to pay college students $4,500 grants to complete a project for an OSS organization.
